DD CNNi TV Channel

The 24-hour current affairs channel DD CNNi Launched on 30th June, 1995 facilitated by an agreement with Turner International entered into by Doordarshan, the former paying an annual fee of US $1.5 million to Doordarshan for the use of its transponder and both sharing the commercial revenue.

As per special two-year agreement with the Atlanta-based Cable News Network (CNN), Doordarshan and CNN were allowed to have access to each other's footage. Doordarshan was utilising only the part of the four-hour window on the DD-CNNI channel and CNN has not yet been given time on the terrestrial channel for any of their programmes. The tenure of the agreement was two years and it was aimed to bring the outside world into Indian territory. Although was a welcome move for a country starved of global exposure, but the new channel had a disconcerting habit of switching gears. One moment you were watching a dreary propaganda film about the Indian Government's earth-shaking success in animal husbandry; the next minute, you were suddenly transported into the thick of the war in Bosnia. This nature of news reporting lead to the downfall of the channel.

The channel filed to generate viewership and revenue as well, and as per agreement, on 31st May, 1997 the channel was shut down. Later CNN joined hands of TV18 with 10 Year agreement and launched CNN-IBN News channel in 2005. After 10 years, they renewed their agreement and renamed this channel to CNN News 18. On the other hand, Doordarshan Launched its DD News Channel on 15th Aug, 1999, which was failed to generate viewership and later converted to DD Bharati on 26th January 2001. Later Doordarshan again launched DD News by replacing DD Metro on 3rd October 2003. This time DD News got success as it scored No.2 on TRP Ratings just after 2 weeks of its launch.
